As I make my way around social networking sites including blogging and twitter (haven't really gotten into Facebook yet, although I have an account,) there is a real need to shorten Internet addresses, or URL's.
For a long time, I've used Tiny URL,
http://www.tinyurl.com, which takes any url as an input and turns it into a 6 alphanumeric digit.
So, if you take this url for a newspaper story from the Orlando Sentinel as an example,…

A couple of you (George and Pam) have been experimenting with leaving comments on the "wall" of a member as a means of communicating with them. Of course, that wall is public, and the postings appear on the latest activity listings as well.
If you wish to send a private message to a "friend" on WinSig, click on your "Inbox" in the right column and you will see that you have the option of sending a message to anyone by email or directly to a friend on WinSig. If you're not presently a friend of…

This is a great, multi-section blog from PC Magazine (now only electronic blogs) on the use of U3 and Portable Aps on USB drives as well as some other interesting options. Worth bookmarking, reading and then returning for reference again in the future.

I have been using Google's Grand Central as my incoming phone service for about a year now, thanks to an invitation from Hewie. Initially, it was a curiosity in that I could have my own, free, incoming phone number on Grand Central, and then have it forward that number to any phone I wanted, up…

The presentation in the following link was created totally within "the cloud". Google Doc's Presention was used for the document. It's published on Google's Sites, a free web hosting program. No computer based software other than Mozilla's Firefox was used!

Sunday was a wrap-up day. See the areas of the show that I just couldn't get to during the week. And, of course, to see how much swag could be acquired as many of the booths at the show were starting to pack up within the last hour. Hewie and I compared our collections in the afternoon. See the pictures at:

Day one of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Literally miles of aisles reminiscent of the old Comdex in its hey day. Greg Smith, now of Juno, Alaska, joined Mike Ungerman and Hewie Poplock at the Excalibur for a breakfast buffet, and then we took the shuttle bus to the Sands Expo Center, which opened early at 8am. It was nice to still have my body on East Coast time so there was really no rush to get moving at 11am EST!
Here, I'm standing next to a clear computer case that's all plast…

Today was a travel day. Orlando to Las Vegas via Denver. Staying at the Excalibur Hotel on a great deal from the Consumer Electronics Association for Integrators, Retailers and Buyers of tech. My business accomplishes this mission, so I qualified. Hewie Poplock (from the Central Florida Computer Society) and I are sharing the room, so Las Vegas is actually affordable.
After getting our Press credentials as bloggers, we headed to the Wynn Hotel for Center Stages registration and Welcome Party. A…

Have you received a "delivery notice failure" email yet? If you have, and you read it with images allowed, then you may have started a massive spam delivery to your inbox that says the originator is you!
Yes, I clicked on the email, and yes, I allowed the image (sigh!), and now I'm getting about 30 emails a day that come from "me" and they contain lots of subjects including more delivery notice failures.
So a word to the wise, if you haven't already fallen for it,
don't!
If you're usin…

If you make an entry on a discussion forum or create a blog entry and decide to post a link, note the link button in the editor that looks like the single link of a chain between the
S s and the picture icon in the toolbar. Highlight the text you want the link to be attached to (even if it's the URL itself), and when you click on that link icon, a window will open up and you can type in or paste in your link. You should include the complete link including the "http://" .
As you post the…

PC Magazine, a Flagship for Ziff Davis, Will Cease Printing a Paper Version
By STEPHANIE CLIFFORD
Ziff Davis Media announced Wednesday that it was ending print publication of its 27-year-old flagship, PC Magazine, and would take the title online only.
It is the latest of several magazine publishers to drop a print edition, as advertising plummets and the cost of printing a paper version rises.
“The viability for us to continue to publish in print just isn’t there anymore,” J…
