Try the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 RC Today!
from Windows Vista Team Blog by Brandon LeBlanc

Last week The Windows Vista Team announced the Release Candidate (RC) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2. They initially made it available for TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Today, they are making it available to anyone interested in testing SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 prior to final release.

You can download the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 RC from their Customer Preview Program site or install through Windows Update using our Windows Update Experience Kit.

If you have the SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Beta installed, you will need to uninstall that first before installing the RC.

You can also check out the SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 RC notable changes here.

Microsoft Updates Windows Vista With Service Pack 2

Service Pack 2 was in my list of updates today, so I let it install. It's interactive, so don't go too far from you computer as it performs its work, as you'll have to respond several times and reboot several times.

Read some of the comments following the article. I had a similar instance of having check disk run, but, thankfully, no damage done to the hard drive as one poor fellow posted.

I did NOT make a backup before doing this (shame on me), so in hindsight, I should have taken the time to backup just in case everything crashed. Some people are reporting crashes; even drives so damaged by the install that they have to be replaced.

I recall that when Service Pack 2 came out for XP, I had similar problems on my main computer and had to revert to a backup to stabilize.

Probably a good discussion item for the next Windows SIG, which I'll miss.

Is Windows Installing Updates Without Permission?

From PC Magazine's Blog: Reports are coming in that Windows XP and Vista are, in some cases, installing updates at system shut down on systems where they are configured to ask for permission first.
